WASHINGTON, DC: The murder trial of the Pakistani American man Kashif Parvaiz, who allegedly had his wife killed by his girlfriend in New Jersey more than three years ago, will finally begin from January 20 of next year.
The shocking murder case which made headlines around the world was committed on August 16, 2011. The victim, Nazish Noorani, 27, was shot dead when she was walking on a Boonton, New Jersey street, with her husband, Parvaiz, and a toddler son, one of the two children the couple had. Parvaiz also got shot, and sustained minor injuries. The toddler escaped unhurt.
Noorani, who was originally from Pakistan, and settled with Parvaiz and her sons in Brooklyn, New York, had gone to visit her family living in Boonton, home to a large population of Pakistanis and Pakistani Americans.
Parvaiz told authorities that his wife was shot dead by three men who shouted racial slurs against him and his family, before opening fire.
The lie was exposed soon after when a Billerica, Massachusetts woman, Antoinette Stephen – Parvaiz’s girlfriend, pleaded guilty to the murder of Noorani.
Superior Court Judge Robert Gilson in Morristown, NJ, has set a firm date of January 20, 2015 to begin jury selection for the trial of Parvaiz, 29, reported The Star-Ledger. Testimony in the trial is expected to start on February 2.
Judge Gilson has ruled that the trial starting in February will concern only the shooting on August 16, 2011 and the events leading up to it.
Parvaiz faces two separate indictments for attempted murder and witness tampering, based on acts he allegedly committed while in the Morris County jail awaiting trial between August 2011 and May 2013.
Gilson has ruled that those cases are to be tried separately after the murder trial is finished.
Parvaiz faces 20 counts of witness tampering between August 2011 and May 2013, involving 20 letters he sent from jail. His attorney, John Latoracca, has said the prosecution contends 19 of those letters went to Stephen.
Stephen pleaded guilty to murder in the case in May 2013 and is expected to be a key witness against Parvaiz in the trial, said the Star-Ledger.
Parvaiz is also charged with three counts of attempted murder in connection with a letter he allegedly sent in October 2012, requesting the killings of Kaleem Noorani and another brother of the victim, Fahim Noorani, along with another former girlfriend, Yelena Belorusets.
In all, Parvaiz is accused of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, five weapons charges, child endangerment, child abuse and hindering apprehension in connection with the 2011 incident. The couple’s toddler son was present in his stroller when his mother was shot to death.
If he is convicted on all the charges in the trial, he would face a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole, plus 78 years.
