BENGALURU: Feeling happy that you received the WhatsApp Calling feature? Better don’t click that link in a hurry as there are reports about cyber scammers targeting users with a spammy link masquerading as WhatsApps calling feature.
If the message says ‘Hey, I am inviting you to try WhatsApp Calling click here to activate now’ users are advised not to click on it.
According to a report published by Daily Star, users who click on this spam link will get their smartphones filled with dangerous malware causing the device to run haywire.
Once the user clicks on the link he/she will be immediately taken to a survey website, importuning as a popular messaging application. But, on completing the survey users will be prompted to download and install more applications that contain dangerous malware codes.
As of now, WhatsApp has not officially announced the calling feature in the messaging app. However, some users with Lollipop updated handsets have reported that they have used the WhatsApp calling feature.
The calling feature in WhatsApp is expected to officially launch sometime in the first half of 2015. This will allow users to make calls to other WhatsApp users for free. This move by the Facebook acquired company has baffled SIM providers in India as users might move away from using the calling feature provided by them.
