WASHINGTON, DC: Universal Pictures’ disaster epic “Everest” is slated to open the Venice Film Festival.
Directed by Baltasar Kormakur (2 Guns, Contraband), the movie stars Hollywood heavyweights Jake Gyllenhaal, Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley, Emily Watson, John Hawkes, Robin Wright and Michael Kelly.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, “Everest” is inspired by true events in 1996, when two different climbing expeditions were faced with an epic struggle for survival in their attempt to reach the summit of the world’s highest mountain.
The film was shot on location in Nepal in the foothills of Everest, the Italian Alps, at Cinecitta Studios in Rome and Pinewood Studios in the U.K.
It has been scripted by two veteran British screenwriters: William Nicholson, who penned “Shadowlands,” “Gladiator,” and last year’s “Unbroken,” and Simon Beaufoy, who won an Oscar for “Slumdog Millionaire” and was nominated for “The Full Monty.”
The writers have adapted the script from five different non-fiction books about the incident, which led to the deadliest day on the mountain until the 2014 avalanche, which some of the second unit crew were caught up in, reported The Guardian.
“Everest” will get an exclusive Imax 3D and premium large-format 3D screens release on Sept. 18 in the U.S., and will then be released worldwide on Sept. 25.
The first of the fall’s major festivals at which many of the year’s top awards contenders will be unveiled, the Venice Film Festival will run from Sept. 2 through Sept. 12, overlapping both the Telluride and Toronto Film Festivals, reported The Wrap.
