Washington: A man and woman were killed in a shooting at a Canadian music festival after-party hosted by rapper Drake.
At least three more people were critically wounded at Toronto’s Muzik nightclub early Tuesday, Canadian news station CP 24 reported. According to Toronto Police, shots were fired inside the club around 3.30am local time and the violence spilled out onto the street. One of the deceased was found dead at the scene while the other passed away after being hospitalized.
The club was packed with people attending a party after OVO Fest, an annual Toronto music festival run by Canada-born Drake.
Officials have not released the names of the victims, and it is not clear if officers have any suspects in custody, according to the Daily News.
Speaking later Tuesday at a news conference, Deputy Chief Peter Sloly said the shooters did not hesitate to fire their weapons despite crowds of people inside and outside the venue, according to CBC.
“We’re lucky there wasn’t a larger body count,” he said. “We have a brazen set of individuals who are willing to put lives at risk.”
Sloly said police won’t say how many shooters are believed to be involved but he said police did not fire any shots in return.
Meanwhile, Mayor John Tory said he is “saddened and angered” by this “senseless shooting” via Twitter.
“This is not the Toronto we know,” he said.
Tuesday’s slayings mark the second consecutive year that gunfire has broken out at the annual after-party. Another shooting broke out at the same event last August, injuring one person.
