A Vietnamese-Australian man named Phuc Dat Bich recently shared a post expressing his disappointment and anger after repeatedly being blocked by Facebook because of his name and the post has gone viral, being shared more than 123,000 times.
“I find it highly irritating the fact that nobody seems to believe me when I say that my full legal name is how you see it,” he said. “I’ve been accused of using a false and misleading name of which I find very offensive.”
The 23-year-old, whose name according to the Evening Standard is pronounced Phoo Da Bic, posted an image of his passport on the social media site after it banned him repeatedly.
According to The Independent, he went on to explain that his frustration stems from what he perceives as a lack of understanding for Eastern culture in the West.
“Is it because I’m Asian? Is it?” he asked in the post.
Members of the Native American community have long reported having their accounts shut down unexpectedly due to Facebook interpreting their names as “fake.”
Facebook’s chief product officer, Chris Cox, issued an apology on the social media following the latest incident.
