Former Indian cricketer and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kirti Azad has been suspended from the party for targeting union finance minister Arun Jaitley with allegations of corruption in Delhi’s cricket body, the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA).
BJP’s National President Amit Shah had a meeting with the central leadership of the party before issuing an official letter of Azad’s suspension, said reports.
“Action taken against Kirti Azad for going against the party line and attacking Arun Jaitley,” the BJP announced.
On Monday, Azad had targeted Jaitley via twitter. He made corruption allegations linked to the DDCA that Jaitley headed for 13 years till 2013. Azad also joined with opposition parties in raising the matter in the Lok Sabha.
Meanwhile, actor-turned-politician and BJP MP from Bihar Shatrughan Sinha called the former cricketer a “hero” and warned that the move could “boomerang”.
“Kirti Azad – hero of the day. Humble appeal to friends. Avoid kneejerk reaction/coercive action against friend who’s fighting against corruption,” Sinha tweeted.
On December 17, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) alleged massive corruption at the DDCA, when it was helmed by Jaitley.
They alleged that funds from the DDCA were siphoned off to people and companies favored by Jaitley, during his tenure.
