A mob of villagers in Korago, Goa chased an American tourist, who ultimately choked to death after falling into a muddy paddy field, on Thursday. The villagers misunderstood him to be a thief.
The tourist was identified as Caitanya Hol (30). He was declared dead on arrival at a local hospital, said police officer Umesh Gaonkar. Police had to use ropes to pull him out of the mud, on Tuesday.
Hol had argued with three Nigerian tourists at a nearby beach before he entered a house in the village near the state Capital Panaji, said reports. The occupants couldn’t understand his English and they thought he was a thief and alerted the villagers.
He came to India in July last year. The cause of death will be known only after receiving his post-mortem report.
The police officials sent his body for post-mortem after the arrival of the US consulate officials.
The consulate officials have contacted Holt’s family in the US and asked the police officials to provide details of the incident.

There have been many similar cases with tourists of all nationalities in Goa and what is common with all of them is that none of them get fully investigated or solved…ever. The authorities just filed them as accidental or natural deaths. I know this as I lost my nephew Felix Dahl in Goa year ago and nothing whats so ever has been done about his case or any other cases. This has been going on for years and there are hundreds of them.
