A New York mom, Nausheen Rahman, 28, of Staten Island, who threw her new-born baby into a garbage dumpster has been charged with murder.
Authorities arrested Rahman and initially charged her with second-degree murder and concealment of a human corpse, reported CBS and AP. Later, the newborn baby was found unconscious and unresponsive in trash, outside her residence in Staten Island, Saturday morning.
The medical examiner will have to determine the cause of death, but investigators told CBS New York that the baby was born alive.
Daily Mail reported emergency crews pronounced the child dead at the scene.
Rahman had gone to Staten Island North Hospital Friday night because she was bleeding and wasn’t feeling well. She said she had given birth five days earlier at home.
The hospital had no record of her birth and she explained that the infant was born at home and that she had disposed of it, according to NBC 4.
After hours of questioning, Rahman said she gave birth but the baby had died and she admitted to throwing the child in the trash before going to the hospital. But she later changed her story and said she gave birth on Thursday.
Neighbors said Rahman has lived with her family for several years at the condominium.
Rahman’s case is similar to that of the Indian American woman, Purvi Patel, who was found guilty of feticide and sentenced to 70 years in jail.
Patel, a 32 year-old resident of Granger, Indiana, was initially charged by St. Joseph County prosecutors with one count of neglect (Class A).

According to police and prosecutors, Patel was roughly 28 weeks pregnant, meaning she had only a couple more months before being able to naturally give birth to her baby. Instead, she opted to induce labor, cut the umbilical cord, put the fetus in a grocery bag and toss it into a dumpster behind a Moe’s Southwest Grill restaurant.
