Mahendra Gupta, dean of the Olin Business School at Washington University, has been named executive of the year by the Asian American Chamber of Commerce of St. Louis. Gupta will be honored at the chamber’s annual dinner, on May 18 at the Mandarin House Banquet Hall in University City.
Gupta has been a faculty member at Olin since 1990 and the dean since 2005. He is stepping down in June to return to academic research and teaching.
Others to be honored at the dinner are Suchin Prapaisilp, owner of Global Food Market in Kirkwood, for business owner of the year; and former U.S. Sen. Christopher S. “Kit” Bond, as connector of the year, for bringing together St. Louis and Asian business interests.
Gupta received his PhD. in accounting from Stanford University in 1990, his MS in industrial administration from Carnegie Mellon University in 1981, and his B.S.c (Honors) in statistics and economics from Bombay University in 1978.
Gupta was appointed dean of the Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis in July 2005. He has served on the Olin faculty since 1990 and in 2004 was named the Geraldine J. and Robert L. Virgil Professor of Accounting and Management. Students have given him the Reid Teaching Award eight times since 2001. He was chosen the Marcile and James Reid Professor for 1996-1997.
Gupta’s research has been published in leading academic journals in the United States and abroad. He has served on several editorial boards, including those of The Accounting Review, The Journal of Management Accounting Research, Canadian Accounting Review, and Accounting Horizons. He is a frequent speaker at research workshops and conferences worldwide.
Gupta has been a consultant to various firms and government agencies. He serves on Caleres Company’s board of directors and its audit committee. He has served on the board and as chair of the Consortium for Graduate Study in Management. Gupta has also served on the Board of Dance St. Louis and Variety – Children’s Charity and the advisory committees for the Center of the Study of Ethics and Human Values, and the Center for Health Policy. He is currently on the board of Junior Achievement, United Way of Greater St. Louis, the academic advisory committee for the World Trade Center and the Talent Council for St. Louis Regional Chamber.
