Legendary Bollywood playback singer Mubarak Begum passed away after a long illness at her residence late on Monday night. She was 80.
Born in Rajasthan, Begum is remembered for singing scores of songs, duets, and ghazals for Bollywood, mainly during 1950s-1970s.
“She breathed her last around 10.p.m on Monday night at her Jogeshwari home. She had been ailing and hospitalized frequently since over a year with various health problems,” her daughter-in-law Zarina Shaikh told a news agency.
Begum started her career with light music recitals performed for All India Radio and her first song in Bollywood was “Mohe Aane Lagi Angrayi” for the film ‘Aayiye’ in 1949. She lent her voice to the evergreen songs like “Kabhi tanhayiyon mein hamari yaad ayegi” from 1961 movie ‘Hamari Yaad Aayegi’, “Mujh ko Apne Gale Lagalo” from 1963 movie ‘Hamrahi’ and “Who na aayenge palat ke” from 1955 classic ‘Devdas’.
Begam worked with the best music directors in the film Industry, Collaborating with S D Burman, Shankar Jaikishan and Khayyam for movies that starred screen legends like Sunil Dutt, Nargis and Rajendra Kumar. In 2011, the Maharashtra government had sanctioned a financial aid of Rs one lakh for treatment of the ailing singer. Salman Khan and Lata Mangeshkar also had extended financial supports to Begam’s family.
Her funeral took place at Oshiwara Muslim Kabrastan, north-west Mumbai suburbs around 11 am on Tuesday.
