Standing ovation for Indonesian designer.
As controversy over ‘hijab’ (religious headscarf) grows globally, an Indonesian designer, Anniesa Hasibuan, made history by presenting her hijab collection at the New York Fashion Week.
Hasibuan’s collection named ‘D’Jakarta’ showcased the colorful and vibrant world of her home city of Jakarta from where she sought inspiration.
“I have been doing this for a really long time and I have never seen a standing ovation at the end of a show. We all had goosebumps. Anniesa was so moved she was crying backstage. It was just really emotional for her,” Lori Riviere, the press manager for the event, was quoted as saying by CNN.
In her collection, hijab was worn with gowns, suits, kimonos, and tunics in colorful silks, velvets and brocades, adorned with sequins and pearls. Anniesa used printing techniques for belt and batik to add an Indonesian touch and her bold signature characters.
“I want to bring the Indonesian name to the fashion world, and use my clothes to introduce people to the different and diverse parts of Indonesia,” Hasibuan told The Jakarta Post.
The 30-year-old Hasibuan was given a standing ovation at the end of the show.
“I am so proud and thankful for everyone on the team who helped me so this event could happen, and I am thankful to international and local media from Indonesia for exposing my show. I did not realize the result can be this amazing, and I am thrilled and humbled by the welcome reaction given,” Hasibuan told CNN.
Hasibuan’s first-ever fashion show was held in London in March 2015 following which she held an exhibition in Paris. She has participated twice in New York’s Couture Fashion Week and won the Best Fashion Designer in 2015.
