A 66-year-old Italian tourist was trampled to death by an elephant at Tsavo National Park near the Kenyan coastal town of Malindi on Sunday, reported The Star.
According to the police, the man identified as Fernando Mocclola was taking pictures of the elephant near Swara Camp in the park while he was attacked. He was on a trip to Kenya with his wife.
Mocclola went to photograph the elephant when he spotted it at a watering point near the camp leaving his wife back at the tent. He started capturing pictures without noticing that he went too close to the animal.
“He excused himself while taking breakfast with the wife and proceeded to water point and started taking pictures, provoking the elephant that charged towards him and attacked him seriously wounding him,” Malindi Police chief Muchangi Mutava was quoted as saying by Capital News.
Workers at the camp responded immediately and managed to chase away the elephant. But, they couldn’t save the life of Mocclola who succumbed to injuries before being airlifted to a hospital in Malindi, reported Xinhua.
The police said that the couple reached Kenya last month and were due to leave next month.
