Garment export a key constituent of overall India-U.S trade, says Rao.

NEW YORK: India’s Ambassador to the United states, Dr. Nirupama Rao, inaugurated an apparel trade show organized by the Apparel Export Promotion Council of India (AEPC), in cooperation with M/S Trade Good, at the Penn Plaza Pavilion, in Manhattan.
Ambassador Prabhu Dayal, Consul General of India in New York, Kevin Burke, President of American Apparel and Footwear Association, and A. Sakthivel, Chairman of the AEPC, were also present.
Rao said that Indian textiles represent an unbroken link between India’s ancient culture and its modern day life style. She noted that India’s apparel sector has rapidly upgraded its technology and is highly competitive in meeting US market demands in various segments including high fashion and mass consumption.
She said that through DISHA (Driving Industry towards Sustainable Human Advancement), the Indian Apparel industry has implemented an industry-wide measure for facilitating and preparing Indian apparel manufacturers toward becoming more socially and environmentally responsible.
Rao said that at $3.3 billion, India’s export of garments represent one of the important constituents of overall India-U.S trade.
Thirty five member exporters exhibited their Fall/Winter 2013-14 collections at the meet, which was closed to the public.
More than 300-400 buyers, including at least 20 brand stores participated in the B-2-B event over held over two days. Some of the major buyers who attended the meet included Ralph Lauren; Warnaco; Children’s Place; Lord & Taylor; Under Amour; VF Sportswear; Nautica; Red Cat; and Jones Apparel.
