CHENNAI: India’s biggest software exporter and technology bellwether Tata Consultancy Services is looking to extend its presence in government vertical projects that have the potential to deliver a double-digit revenue contribution in the next few years.
Recently, the company won an Indian Postal Department contract worth about Rs.11 billion, helping TCS extend its lead over rivals domestically. It is also aggressively trying to land U.S. federal and state government contracts at the moment.
The IT service provider has received a number Indian government contracts lately. The company could make early inroads by investing and developing specific solutions for better governance. Its experience in tax collection in India has really changed the governance of the income tax department.
The company wants to replicate that success in other government departments.
The six-year, Rs.11 billion India Post contract, according to TCS, will help the department to achieve an extensive reach among the population in India by creating higher customer interaction channels and offering new lines of business. The project is also aimed at offering the customers service through IT enablement of business processes and support functions.
Commenting on the project, Department of Posts Secretary P. Gpinath said, “We are looking to improve customer service in terms of service quality, speed and reliability of delivery, and operational efficiency, and look forward to our partner, TCS, bringing leading and best industry practices.”
For its part, TCS’ vice president and global head, Government Solutions, Tanmoy Chakrabarty, said, “The CSI project is about service delivery transformation through a technology-led, service-oriented approach to offer world-class delivery of postal services to Indian citizens. This project once again reiterates TCS’ commitment to help the government deliver citizen services more efficiently.”
In terms of project value, it is reportedly the second biggest government contract the company landed, the biggest being the Rs.20 billion Passport Seva Project.
TCS’s modus operandi is clear: undertake huge projects within India and exhibit the scale and complexity domestically before taking them to other nations globally. This seems to be paying off as it extends its presence in Kenya, Uganda and Zambia in Africa, as well as Mississippi in the United States.
TCS focus on government contracts is quite understandable as they are among the fastest growing sectors.
