NEW YORK: Continuing the fine tradition that her parents, President Bill Clinton and former Senator and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton espoused of supporting notable Indian American charity organizations and social causes in India, Chelsea Clinton will make her debut as a speaker at the Pratham gala this Fall, here.
Chelsea Clinton, 33, who now works as a correspondent for NBC News, and is also a committed Board member of the Clinton Foundation and Clinton Global Initiative that works for humanitarian causes, will attend the gala on October 4th, at the USS Intrepid, in Manhattan. The theme of this year’s gala is “Journeying Toward a Fully-Educated India.”
Pratham, since its inception in Mumbai 20 years ago, has done yeoman’s service for the cause of education of the less privileged in India, and over the years has spread its wings to collect money overseas, including in the US.
According to a press release by the organization, Pratham currently serves the education needs of underprivileged children in 16 of India’s 28 states and is one of the world’s largest non-profit organizations in the field of primary education. Its innovations have been recognized with the Kravis Prize for Leadership, Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship, and most recently, the WISE Prize, which is equated with a Nobel in Education, for its CEO & co-founder, Dr. Madhav Chavan.
Pratham’s strategy centers on recruiting youth from the communities it serves and training them as teachers. More than 62,000 volunteers reach more than two million children in 20,000 villages.
“We are thrilled to have Chelsea Clinton join us,” said Dinyar Devitre, Chairman-Elect of Pratham (www.prathamusa.org) in a statement. “Recognized for her dedication to global humanitarianism as a committed philanthropist and Board Member of the Clinton Foundation, Ms. Clinton tirelessly advocates for a healthier, equitable and safe world.”
In a statement, Clinton expressed her enthusiasm for the cause of Pratham: “I applaud Pratham for the strides it has made in helping expand quality education for every child in India. Pratham’s strategy of engaging all the sectors that need to work together to ensure any child anywhere gets the education he or she deserves – the government, businesses and private citizens that work collectively toward a common goal – is similar to the model the Clinton Foundation employs in our work across the world in expanding access to quality health care and economic opportunity.”
