MUMBAI: Actresses Sharmila Tagore and her daughter Soha Ali Khan have joined hands for women empowerment: they have come forward for Doordarshan’s upcoming show, ‘Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon’, which focuses on atrocities against women.
The duo believe that the show would bring a sea of change in society in terms of behavior towards women, as it challenges some critical societal issues like child marriage, early pregnancy, domestic violence and sex selection.
Tagore said she will also ask her son Saif Ali Khan and daughter-in-law Kareena Kapoor to join the project.
The veteran actress is of the opinion that Indian TV soap operas still portray women in stereotypical form, within kitchen walls, and looking after family and home.
“Today, every woman is doing job and managing her family too. Women should be portrayed intelligently in today’s time,” she said.
Produced and directed by Feroz Abbas Khan and launched by the Population Foundation of India (PFI), the show will be broadcast from March 8th to mark the International Women’s Day. It is centered on a doctor’s life, and her initiative to curb atrocities taking place against women in society. The concept of the show has been taken from popular South African TV show ‘Soul City’.
Soha Ali Khan said, “They (my family) were in total agreement when I wanted to continue my Master’s, but they disagreed when I wanted to enter films. However, they never stop me from doing what I want to. I am very happy that I have such a family and parents. However, I am aware that many girls don’t have that life and this is the reason why I support the show, which shows a message.”
She urged her male counterparts for equal contribution towards such women-centric shows, to make a huge difference in society.
