WASHINGTON, DC: Houston-based cardiologist Dr. Sanjay Patel has been named “Physician of the Year” for 2014 by St. Luke’s Woodland Hospital, one of the leading healthcare centers in the state.
Patel was given the award at the Doctors Day celebration, hosted by the hospital’s key administration earlier this month. He was nominated by the hospital’s staff and management, according to Your Houston News, based on his “commitment to quality and excellence in health care, demonstrated level of patient-focused care and leadership among their physician peers and patient care staff.”
Patel is the Medical Director of the St. Luke’s Performance Medicine Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. His clinical specialties are interventional cardiology, and wrist-access cardiac catheterization, a particularly rare type of cardiology that Patel is uniquely qualified to perform.
Originally from India, Patel earned his medical degree at Gujarat University before coming to the US. He did his clinical internship at New York Medical College, as well as his residence, and completed his fellowships at New York’s St. Vincent Hospital and Medical Center. Patel joined the St. Luke’s Woodland Hospital in 2008.
He is board-certified in cardiovascular medicine and interventional cardiology, and is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology. Additionally, he is a diplomat for the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Society of Echocardiography, and the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology.
Aside from all of that work, which is already considerable, Patel is the host of a lecture series, entitled “Coffee with the Cardiologist,” that is sponsored by the St. Luke’s Woodland Hospital. He also oversees nursing classes, and maintains his own private practice apart from the hospital itself. He is also an avid tennis player.
“It’s a great honor to be recognized as St. Luke’s Physician of the Year,” Patel said to Your Houston News, upon receiving the award. “The staff here is incredible and together we’ve made tremendous growth and progress in cardiac care. In addition to embracing and implementing technology, the administration here shows great support for physicians, which facilitates excellence in patient care.”
St. Luke’s Woodland Hospital President Debra F. Sukin said that she and the hospital at-large were incredibly proud of Patel, and were honored to have him at their facility.
