WASHINGTON, DC: Bollywood siren Priyanka Chopra has released her third single, “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” for which the music video has now been debuted online.
“I Can’t Make You Love Me” is the latest song from Chopra, who released her first two singles, “In My City” and “Exotic,” in late 2012 and mid-2013, respectively. The official music video for “I Can’t Make You Love Me” launched on Tuesday, and has already racked up close to 500,000 views on YouTube; the song, in just audio form, was introduced last week.
The song is Chopra’s first to not feature another well-established American artist on it – “In My City” featured former Black Eyed Pea will.i.am, and “Exotic” had Latin American superstar Pitbull on the track. Chopra’s latest song is a cover of the original “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” released in 1991 and performed by Bonnie Raitt. The song is routinely listed among the best pop ballads of all time, with Rolling Stone magazine listing it at #399 in their rankings of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All-Time.”
The 2014 version is decidedly more of a dance track, with lots of bass and a good amount of auto-tune thrown in. There are some shades of Rihanna and David Guetta on the track. Stylistically, it fits in well with Chopra’s previous two songs, but the lack of another artist on the track is noticeable and problematic; without someone like Pitbull to take over for a verse, “I Can’t Make You Love Me” quickly becomes repetitive, even at less than four minutes long.
Still, the song’s beats make it catchy enough, and it will almost surely be played regularly at clubs and dance parties throughout the US and India. It’s certainly a step up from “In My City,” which got selected by the NFL Network as its Thursday Night Football anthem, but isn’t quite as memorable as “Exotic,” which became Chopra’s biggest commercial success of the three songs thus far.
The video for “I Can’t Make You Love Me” features Hollywood actor Milo Ventimiglia, who is perhaps best known for his role as Peter Petrelli on the NBC series “Heroes,” in addition to smaller roles in “Gilmore Girls” and the upcoming film Grace of Monaco, which is co-produced by Yash Raj Films.
With three singles now under her belt, Chopra still hasn’t announced any plans for a full album. She has spent the last few years shuttling between Mumbai and Los Angeles, splitting her time between her musical pursuits and her busy film schedule. In February, she released her latest film, Gunday, and is set to hit screens again later this year with Mary Kom, a biography of the Indian Olympic boxer.
