MUMBAI: Ankit Tiwari, the singer best known for his rendition of the ballad “Sunn Raha Hai Naa Tu” from last year’s mega-blockbuster Aashiqui 2, has been arrested under charges of raping a young woman on Wednesday night in Mumbai.
Tiwari was arrested and brought to the city’s Versova Police Station. Also arrested was Tiwari’s brother, Ankur, who is charged with having threatened the victim not to divulge what happened to the authorities.
The victim, Nidhi Khanna, is Tiwari’s girlfriend, reports the Deccan Chronicle. The woman is said to be 28 years old, and works as an event manager. She has reportedly been dating Tiwari for some time, and the couple has apparently been on the rocks of late because of Tiwari reneging on a promise to marry the girl.
According to Daily News and Analysis, Khanna is a divorcee who also has a 12 year-old child. She filed an FIR at the Versova police station after the incident. The Tiwaris’ lawyer, who spoke to DNA, said that Ankur will likely get bail because his charges are far less serious, but Ankit’s fate remains up in the air.
Tiwari has received numerous awards and nominations over the last year for his work on Aashiqui 2. In additional to singing the song Sunn Raha Hai Na Tu, he also composed the track, as well as the female version sung by Shreya Ghoshal. His co-composing efforts bagged him the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director.
He is also one of the music directors behind the upcoming film Ek Villain, starring Aashiqui 2’s Shraddha Kapoor and Student of the Year’s Siddharth Malhotra. That film is set to hit screens on June 27.
