WASHINGTON, DC: A new report indicates that Indian-origin students in the US are second only to those from China, trailing by a margin of over 176,000.
The newly released US Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) report says that there are exactly 113,813 students from India currently enrolled in academic programs in the US. That number is second only to the number of students from China – 290,133. That’s a difference of 176,300, meaning Chinese students account for 154% of Indian students in the US.
The top 10 countries of origin for international students in the US are: China, India, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Canada, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, Mexico, and Brazil.
India has the second-highest rate of growth in terms of sending students to the US last year – 8%. Only Saudi Arabia had a higher rate of growth, with a 10% rate of growth.
The data, released in April, says that 75% of all foreign students enrolled in US academic programs originate from Asia. In terms of India specifically, 78% of the students in the US are here studying STEM fields – Science Technology Engineering Math.
The report designates students by F and M categories, the former meaning that the student is in the US for an academic reason, and the latter meaning it’s for a vocational reason. Twenty-nine percent of all F+M students are from China, and 11% are from India alone.
Additionally, 24% of all F+M students studying STEM fields are from India and China alone, while 25% of all F+M students studying health-related fields are from Canada and India.
The top three states with F+M students are California (46,816), New York (31, 735), and Texas (31,538) – together, they account for 31% of the F+M STEM students. In terms of states with the largest individual percentages of F+M STEM students, the list is Indiana (45%), Texas (44%), and Michigan (44%).
The SEVP report also says that 67% of foreign students studying STEM fields are male.

Putting numbers aside, being an international student isn’t easy, given our complex culture and language. Assistance must come from various sources. A new award-winning worldwide book/ebook to help anyone coming to the US is “What Foreigners Need To Know About America From A To Z: How to Understand Crazy American Culture, People, Government, Business, Language and More.” It paints a revealing picture of America for those who will benefit from a better understanding, including international students. Endorsed worldwide by ambassadors, educators, and editors, it also identifies “foreigners” who became successful in the US and how they contributed to our society, including students.
A chapter on education identifies schools
that are free and explains how to be accepted to an American university and
cope with a new culture, friendship process and classroom differences they will
encounter. Some stay after graduation. It has chapters that explain how US
businesses operate and how to get a job (which differs from most countries), a
must for those who want to work for an American firm here or overseas. It also
has chapters that identify the most common English grammar and speech problems foreigners have and tips for easily overcoming them, the number one stumbling block they say they have to succeeding here.
Most struggle in their efforts and need guidance from schools’ international departments, immigration protection, host families, concerned neighbors and fellow students, and books like this to extend a cultural helping hand so we all have a win-win situation. Good luck to all wherever you study!
