WASHINGTON, DC: An Indian video game company, based in Pune, was recognized for its technologically innovative work last month at the 27th Annual Edison Awards, held in San Francisco on April 30.
Rolocule Games picked up the 2014 Silver Edison Award, given for the company’s motion gaming technology. According to a press release issued by the company, Rolomotion’s technology “precisely tracks various movements of smartphone and allows users to play games using natural motion gestures on television.”
The technology has been hailed as revolutionary, as it allows game developers to use smartphones as a secondary controllers for game systems, essentially using an iPhone like a Wii controller. Data like this can be used to develop better games for mobile handsets, which can increasingly rely on motion technology and other such innovations to keep customers coming in.
“Its an honor to be recognized by the Edison awards and to join an elite group of companies like Microsoft, Apple, Qualcomm and others who have won this award in its illustrious 27 year history” said Rolocule Games CEO Rohit Gupta after winning the award. “The award also shows our commitment to build a truly innovative global gaming company that will inspire the next wave of social games on mobile.”
Often referred to as the “Oscar of Innovation” in tech and video game circles, the Edison Awards were stared in 1987 as a way to recognize developments in video game technology that have the potential to create long-lasting impacts on the medium. The award is given out by the Edison Universe, a 501(c)(3) organization “dedicated to fostering future innovators.”
Rolocule Games was founded in 2010, and has since become one of India’s leading video game developers. The company’s “Flick Tennis: College Wars” game won the “People’s Choice Award” at the 8th International Mobile Gaming Awards (IMGA) in Barcelona, Spain in 2012. The company was also recognized by NASSCOM as one of India’s Top 10 Emerging Companies, also in 2012.
