MUMBAI: Burgeoning American pop star Priyanka Chopra had a run-in with one of America’s most iconic pop queens last week: Britney Spears.
Spears and Chopra met in Las Vegas, at the Surrender night club, and the meeting was commemorated with a photo that got posted on social networking site Twitter. Chopra was in Sin City to promote her latest English single, “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” her third pop song since jump-starting her singing career in 2012.
When Chopra got wind that Spears was nearby on May 6, she jumped at the chance to meet the pop star, who has dominated US airwaves since her debut album, “…Baby One More Time,” announced her as the next big American songstress in 1999. The two had a short, sweet meeting, after which Chopra said that meeting Spears was practically a dream come true.
While Chopra continues to promote her musical aspirations, Spears has always been a media darling, for better or worse. After shaping herself in the image of the good girl next door with her first few albums, her life began a rapid downward spiral, as drugs and failed relationships took their toll on Spears’ personal life.
Over the last few years, however, Spears has regained solid footing, dropping chart-topper after chart-topper. Her eighth and latest studio album, “Britney Jean,” released in November of last year, receiving mixed critical reception but debuting at #4 on the Billboard 200 charts in the US.
Chopra, meanwhile, was just seen as the heroine in the Bollywood production Gunday, starring alongside Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor, and Irrfan Khan. She will next be seen as the title character in the sports biopic Mary Kom. Despite having three singles to her name, released at a clip of one per year since 2012, she has not announced any plans for a full studio album yet.
