BANGALORE: Ajay Devgn and Rohit Shetty’s roaring sequel to 2011’s Singham is coming back to theatres this Diwali.
Singham was one of the very few movies of 2011 to cross the 100 crore mark. Singham Returns, as the sequel is named, is expected to do the same as it releases in the auspicious season of Diwali. Devgn returns as the titular hero, the beat cop with a lion’s attitude. However, Kajal Aggarwal who played Singham’s love interest in the first film, is not returning for the sequel. Instead we have B-Town Bebo, Kareena Kapoor, as the female lead of the film. Devgn and Kareena have acted together in many films before this; 2 of them, Golmaal 2 and Golmaal 3 were directed by Shetty himself.
Singham as we all know was not an original film, but rather a remake of a Tamil blockbuster. It all began with Suriya and his film Singham in 2010. Devgn’s Singham was a remake of that film. Last year, Suriya released a sequel to the film, Singham II which was also a super hit like its predecessor. Singham Returns for a long time was expected to be a remake of Singham II but according to the latest news, Singham Returns will have a fresh script, making it a much more original effort than Singham. With films like the Golmaal series, Bol Bachchan and Chennai Express, all of which are full of tongue-in-cheek situational humor, Shetty is one of the most successful filmmakers of Bollywood.
Singham Returns was earlier titled as the Tamil sequel, Singham 2, but since then it has changed its name. The film also stars Amole Gupte, Anupam Kher, Dayanand Shetty. The music is being composed by Himesh Reshammiya. The film went on the floors in Goa in mid-May, and is expected to wrap up by the end of July.
