BANGALORE: Karan Johar has decided to make yet another remake of a foreign film into Bollywood. But this time his eyes are not on Hollywood. He has rather chosen an award winning French film called The Intouchables. Johar has signed Aashiqui 2 director Mohit Suri for this film.
Recently Johar posted on his Twitter account, “Guneet Monga and Dharma Productions will co-produce the official remake of The Intouchables directed by Mohit Suri.”
The Intouchables, released in 2011, has François Cluzet and Omar Sy in the lead. The film was directed by Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano. The story is of the friendship between a quadriplegic man and his live-in help. Cluzet plays Philippe, an aristocratic quadriplegic man living in a luxurious mansion. Sy plays Driss, an ambition-less young man who gets hired as his live-in help. Slowly over time, the two overcome their differences and form a great bond of friendship and brotherhood. The film has received worldwide critical acclaim. Both Cluzet and Sy have got praises for their performances.
Moreover, this film is well known among the physically challenged community who strive to realize their position in the world. It’s a popular choice in all disability film festivals. Last September in Chennai, the Ability Foundation hosted a film festival on disability in which this film was shown. Parallels have been drawn between this film and the Malayalam film Beautiful.
Johar’s last attempt at making an official remake was when he remade the Hollywood flick Stepmom into We Are Family. Unfortunately, it was a flop, critically and commercially. Despite having a cast led by Kajol and Kareena Kapoor, the film failed to do well. The film was directed by Siddharth Malhotra (not to be confused with the Ek Villain actor).
