NEW YORK: An Indian citizen, Karthikeyan Natarajan, 27, of La Jolla, California, has been sentenced in federal court in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to 18 months in jail for a rape threat he made to a woman via email last year.
United States District Judge Nora Barry Fischer imposed the sentence last week, and it was announced by United States Attorney David J. Hickton.
The law provides for a maximum total sentence of five years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed was based upon the seriousness of the offense and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.
According to information presented to the court, on April 5, 2013, Natarajan willfully transmitted a threat via interstate commerce to injure the person of another, that is, he sent a threat via computer electronic communications to an individual threatening to rape her.
The woman was not identified in court papers.
Assistant United States Attorney Amy L. Johnston prosecuted this case on behalf of the government.
Hickton commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Carnegie Mellon Police Department for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Natarajan.
It was not immediately clear when he would begin his sentence or if he plans to appeal the verdict, but since Natarajan is not a citizen of the US, in all likelihood he would be deported to India once he finishes his time in jail.

Rape is a devastating crime. Some women are badly injured. Some become pregnant. Some contract HIV. But the emotional trauma can be worse than any physical injury. I want to share this with you guys it is a really helpful stuff when it comes to incidents like this. http://safetrec.com/
