Director Velraj and Dhanush had earlier worked together in several projects like Aadukalam (2011) and 3 (2012) where while Dhanush was still the lead actor, Velraj had played the part of the cinematographer. Word is that Dhanush had requested Velraj to debut as a director while he himself had promised to play the lead role if the cinematographer could come up with a good script, which he evidently did.
Also titled D25, to signify Dhanush’s 25th release, the title of the film Velaiyilla Pattadhari is also what Dhanush is to be signified as in the film. The name is a play on the acronym VIP, which is designed to produce ironical humor in the film.
