NEW YORK: An Indian American man from the Bronx borough of New York City has been sentenced a quarter-century behind bars for his conviction regarding the sexual assault of a minor and possession of child pornography materials.
Narendra Tulsiram was sentenced on Monday to 25 years in prison, after pleading guilty in April of last year on charges that he sexually exploited a child and kept pornographic images of children. The sentence came from US District Judge J. Paul Oetken, and was announced by the office of US District Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Preet Bharara.
“For five years, Narendra Tulsiram preyed on his minor victim – sexually abusing and extorting her. Today’s sentence ensures Tulsiram will pay for the innocence he stole and be prevented from harming others,†Bharara said on Monday, in a statement.
According to the Department of Justice, Tulsiram (50) abused a single 13 year-old female victim repeatedly between 2006 and September of 2011, taking sexually explicit photographs and forcing the victim to perform sexual acts on him. He would also email the photographs he took of the victim back to her, saying that if she told anyone about the abuse, the photographs would get sent out to everyone she knew.
Through an investigation by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations and the New York City Police Department, however, Tulsiram was brought to justice, with his arrest occurring on January 11, 2012. He was charged with two counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, one count of possessing child pornography, and one count of transporting child pornography, all of which he pleaded guilty to.
The charges mandated at least 15 years in prison, with a maximum of 30 years for each of the sexual exploitation counts, a maximum of 10 years for the child pornography possession count, and between five and 20 years for the transportation of child pornography count.
“The depraved acts that Narenda Tulsiram committed against his 13-year-old victim brought an abrupt end to her childhood, and then he went even further – using pictures of the sexual abuse he forced her to endure in a campaign of extortion,†said Bharara at the time of Tulsiram’s conviction. “Nothing can reclaim what Tulsiram stole from his victim, but we hope that his guilty plea and the time he will spend in jail bring some measure of closure.â€
In addition to his jail sentence, he will have to be on supervised release once he gets out of prison, and will have to register as a sex offender.
