BANGALORE: Pakistani actress and model Humaima Malick gave her first-ever interview with an Indian publication recently, as the publicity campaign for her big Bollywood launch, Raja Natwarlal, kicks into high gear.
Speaking to the Bombay Times in an interview published on Tuesday, Malick (25) talked about where she comes from, how she hopes to segue into a promising career in Bollywood, and what it was like to work with Bollywood star Emraan Hashmi, who plays the film’s title character.
Originally from Karachi, Malick was born to a housewife mother and pathan father. She and her family travelled a lot, and she says she currently maintains residences in Karachi, Dubai, and London, spending most of her time with her parents in the Dubai residence.
“I have five more siblings. One of my brothers is a neurosurgeon, another a lawyer from Oxford and another a model. One of my sisters is the famous host Dua Malick in Pakistan,†explained Malick.
After spending years in the Pakistani film industry, she decided to break into Bollywood, a decision she hopes will land her big opportunities. She says she looked to fellow Pakistanis and good friends Ali Zafar (Mere Brother ki Dulhan) and Atif Aslam for inspiration in moving to Bombay.
If Raja Natwarlal proves to be a success – which could be a tall order, given that it’s releasing in the height of Eid season and will be hot on the tails of Salman Khan’s Kick – Malick hopes to work with her acting idols: Amitabh Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit-Nene.
“My parents love him and I have grown up seeing his acting. I love Madhuri’s smile and I feel Bollywood can never have a package like her again,†she said.
Malick credited Hashmi, who plays a conman in the upcoming film, with making the transition to Bollywood seamless, calling him a comfortable co-star and “super-professional.â€
“He has worked with a lot of new co-actors, so it is a part of his temperament to help newcomers with being comfortable on the set,†said Malick to the Bombay Times. “He is very funny and has great energy on the set Mashallah. His humor is fantastic and he is a very intelligent actor. He is super professional, who comes dot on time and goes on time. He has no hang-ups and is very grounded.â€
Malick showered more praise on Hashmi, telling the Times News Network that he should do a film in Pakistan. Malick said Pakistanis would welcome him and actor Kunal Deshmukh with open arms.
“I have also invited both Emraan and Kunal Deshmukh to visit Pakistan to promote the movie. Emraan has a huge fan following in Pakistan, and I’m sure people will eagerly wait to welcome him here in Pakistan,†she said.
Raja Natwarlal opens in cinemas around the world on August 29, and co-stars Paresh Rawal, Deepak Tijori, and Kay Kay Menon.
