BANGALORE: The annual STAR Vijay Awards, honoring excellence in Tamil cinema over the last year, were presented in a star-studded ceremony this week, with critical hit and National Film Award-winnerThangameengal winning the Best Film award at the function.
Best Director went to Bala, for his work on the film Paradesi. The top acting awards went to actor Kamal Haasan for Viswaroopam, and actress Nayanthara for Raja Rani, while the supporting prizes went to actor Bharathiraja for Pandinadu, and actress Dhanshika for Paradesi.
The debut prizes went to actor Gautham Karthik and actress Nazriya, while the debut directing prize went to Atlee for the film Raja Rani. Haasan picked up an addition award as Favorite Director, while Favorite hero went to Vijay, Favorite Heroine went to Nayanthaara, Favorite Film went toArrambam, and Favorite Song went to “Oodha Colouru Ribbon.”
A.R. Rahman bagged the award for Best Music Director, for his compositions on the soundtrack of the film Kadal. Best Playback Singer went to Yuvan for Male, and Shakthi Shree Gopalan for Female. Best Song was given to “Edhimeechaladi.”
The ceremony’s honorary Chevalier Sivaji Ganesan Award went to Tamil director Shankar, who most recently directed the 2010 Aishwarya Rai-Rajnikanth starrer Robot. The “Entertainer of India” award went to Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan.
Best Villain went to Arjun for Kadal, Best Comedian went to Santhanam forTVSK, and several of the smaller technical categories went as follows: Best Art Direction – Lalgudi Ilayaraja (Viswaroopam); Best Costume Designer – Poornima (Paradesi); Best Stunt Director – Anal Arasu (Paandianadu); Best Cinematagraphy – Rajeev Menon (Kadal); Best Choreography – Brindha (Kadal); Best Background Music – Santhosh Narayanan (Soodhu Kavvum); and Best Crew – Edhirneechal.
