BANGALORE: Punjabi rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh has followed in the footsteps of his good friend, Akshay Kumar, and purchased a team for the upcoming World Kabaddi League (WKL).
The WKL is expected to launch next month, and will feature teams in at least five different countries – such as the UK, UAE, Canada, and the US – playing against each other through December of 2014. The idea of owning an international Kabaddi team was too good an offer to pass up, Singh told reporters in India on Friday, and he revealed that the team will be named the Yo Yo Tigers, after himself.
Singh explained that he wants to use the “Yo Yo” moniker as a way of branding himself and his team, and that by using it, his fans will support the Kabaddi team as much as they have supported him. Coming from Punjab, Singh said that he played Kabaddi frequently as a youngster, and it was the desire to bring the sport to even more people that prompted the purchase.
The terms of the team acquisition were not disclosed, but it continues a recent streak of successes for Singh. Recently, he shot a video for his song called “Superstar” on the beaches of California with current Bollywood “it” girl Sonakshi Sinha. His tracks have dominated the airwaves in India, and last year, he had two big Bollywood hits: “Party All Night” in the film Boss (which featured Sinha), and “Lungi Dance,” which played over the end credits of the smash hit Chennai Express.
Singh revealed that he is currently in the process of recording a track for his team, which he hopes to debut in time for the launch of the WKL later this year.
