BANGALORE: Riteish Deshmukh’s hot streak at the box office continues, only this time, he’s making a splash with a Marathi film.
Deshmukh’s Lai Bhari opened in theaters on July 11, directly opposite the new Karan Johar production, Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania, which re-unites burgeoning superstars Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan. Despite that, Deshmukh’s film became a hit with audiences within Maharashtra, grossing around Rs. 10.55 crore on its opening weekend within the state.
That’s a huge opening for a film in a regional dialect, and proof of Deshmukh’s growing star power. Within the last month, Deshmukh now has three films which have opened to huge numbers: Humshakals (which has garnered some of the worst reviews a Bollywood film has ever seen),Ek Villain (which sees the normally comedic actor take on his first villainous role), and now Lai Bhaag.
The Hindustan Times reports that the Marathi film took in Rs. 3.1 crore on Friday, its opening day, and experienced steady growth during both its consecutive following days, grossing Rs. 3.6 crore on Saturday and Rs. 3.85 crore on Sunday.
Lai Bhaag co-stars Sharad Kelkar, and is co-produced by Deshmukh himself. It also features cameos from Deshmukh’s wife Genelia D’Souza, and Bollywood superstar Salman Khan in his first-ever Marathi performance – a fact that almost certainly helped contribute to the huge box office response.
D’Souza and Khan co-starred in January’s Jai Ho, and likely explains how Deshmukh and Khan met and arranged for him to appear in Lai Bhaag. Khan is currently prepping for the release of his next film, the Eid releaseKick, which is sure to kick down a few box office records of its own.
