MUMBAI: Australian actor Hugo Weaving will be seen in a film which will be directed by Ship of Theseus director Anand Gandhi.
Hugo, who presented Anand’s internationally acclaimed film in Australia, has given his consent to be a part of Anand’s second full-length feature film. The two had met during the Melbourne International Film Festival and Ship of Theseus had left the actor awestruck. They soon started discussing the possibility of collaborating and Anand recently presented an idea to Hugo, which found favor with him.
Gandhi and Hugo were part of the jury panel at the Sydney International Film Festival, where they forged a bond, sharing interests in films and art.
“Ship of Theseus is an absolutely rare and profound piece of cinema, full of wonder and enlightenment. Anand Gandhi has proved himself as a groundbreaking filmmaker,” stated Hugo then.
Weaving’s international breakthrough came when he squeezed into a frock for Stephan Elliott’sThe Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. In 1999 he glided into the blockbuster club as Agent Smith in The Matrix, a role he reprised in two sequels.
He was Elven master Elrond in Peter Jackson’s three Lord of the Rings and two Hobbit films, the second and said to be last of which, The Battle of the Five Armies, is due for release later this year. He’s also had a recurring role in the Transformer films, played super villain Red Skull in aCaptain America movie and the anarchist V in the graphic novel adaptation V for Vendetta.
Anand doesn’t want to disclose much now but has said that it will be a big-scale period drama. He will begin work on this once his next production Tumbad releases.
Hugo is currently busy playing Macbeth in a new production by the Sydney Theatre Company, directed by Kip Williams.
