NEW YORK: The Indian Army has ordered a probe against Brigadier Manoj Tiwari, who is now serving at the Army War College, over allegations by a New York-based physician Dr. Anurita Kapur, that he drugged and raped her in his office when serving as the Military Attache to India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, in New York, two years ago.
Kapur, who is also an entrepreneur, runs the Livingston Medical Groups (LMG), a nationwide firm that offers over 21 medical services to physicians. She is well known in New York City Indian American social circles.
Kapur had come out in the open recently about her allegations against Tiwari, who she said was a predator and a womanizer. She claimed he relentlessly pursued her to seek her friendship and confidence through extravagant measures.
Kapur, who is a single mother, and divorced from an earlier marriage, wanted a platonic relationship, but Tiwari had other ideas, she says. He invited her over day one day to his office, and gave her a sedated cup of tea, which left Kapur incapable of defending herself, after which Tiwari brutally raped her, leaving her bloody.
Read the full story, detailing the rape allegations by Kapur, in an earlier story done by The American Bazaar:
According to Kapur, Tiwari managed to placate her and stopped her reporting the rape to authorities, saying he would marry her, but hid the fact that he was already married, with a family in India. Once he left back for India, he stopped all communication with her, except for threatening her with dire consequences.
Kapur had tried hard to get the attention of Indian officials in the United States, including writing to the Indian ambassadors at the Permanent Mission and the Indian Embassy, and also to government officials and Army top brass, as well as the Prime Minister’s office, but it was to no avail. That is, till now.
Now, the Indian Army has ordered a Court of Inquiry (CoI) against Kapur, who had the rank of a Colonel when he served at the Mission in Manhattan, according to a report by NDTV.
