BANGALORE: Microsoft, the tech giant that recently purchased Nokia, has now come out with a new range of Lumia smartphones trying to up its battle against Samsung and Apple. Earlier, Microsoft had little success with their phones in the premium category.
Even though the company has not yet confirmed the price of the new Lumia phones in India, Lumia 830, 735 and 730 could approximately cost Rs. 26,190, Rs. 17,370 and Rs. 15,800, respectively, when it hits Indian stores next month. The big releases are seen as a step forward for Microsoft in building up a new customer base after their acquisition of Nokia.
Microsoft has also announced the release of a new update for Lumia phones running on Windows 8 called ‘Lumia Denim’, but this update will be exclusive for smartphones from Microsoft, which means companies like HTC will have to wait.
Lumia 830
The new Microsoft Lumia 830 is powered with a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor coupled with 1 GB RAM. The phone has an in-built storage capacity of 16 GG and is upgradable to 128 GB using microSD card slot. The camera department of Lumia 830 has a 10 megapixel auto focus camera, capable of shooting full HD videos. The phone has a 2,200mAh battery which is susceptible to drain early as a result of the full HD 5 inch display. Microsoft has also offered 15 GB cloud storage of Lumia 830 in SkyDrive. The phone also has full connectivity features including 4G LET.
Lumia 735
The Lumia 730, on the other hand, has the same quad-core 1.2 GHz processor and 1 GB RAM, but the display size is smaller when compared to Lumia 830. It has a 6.7 megapixel rear camera along with a 5 MP front-facing camera, making it a hot pick among selfie enthusiasts. It has an internal storage capacity of 8 GB that can be expanded up to 128 GB using micoSD card. The Sky Drive cloud storage is also enabled in this phone.
Lumia 730
Microsoft Lumia 730 is a dual SIM 3G smartphone. One of the shortcomings of this phone, when compared to the other two, is the lack of support to 4G LET. Lumia 730 is also powered by quad-core 1.2 GHz processor and 1 GB RAM. The camera department and storage are identical to that of Lumia 735.
Microsoft Corporate Vice-President, Mobile Devices Sales, Chris Weber said, “Our strategy is to help people do more with stunning products that unite and showcase the best of Microsoft’s digital work and life experiences.”
Nokia was a big name in India till a few years back, but the company lost majority of its customer base after the Android wave that struck the Indian smartphone market. When Microsoft is coming up with the new Lumia devices, it should be seen as an effort to reclaim the customers who were loyal to Nokia, a company they acquired at the beginning of this year.
