WASHINGTON, DC: India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrives in the United States on Friday on a five-day visit, has a packed schedule. Here are some of the highlights of the visit:
Friday, September 26, 2014:
The prime minister arrives in New York early afternoon. Modi’s first day in Big Apple is a relatively light day.
He is scheduled to meet New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, who will pay a courtesy visit, and Nobel laureate Harold Varmus, the director of the National Cancer Institute.
Saturday, September 27, 2014:
The premier will visit National September 11 Memorial & Museum in lower Manhattan in the morning.
Later in the day, he will address the General Assembly and also hold bilateral talks with select world leaders.
Modi is scheduled to meet former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, whose Bloomberg Philanthropies is promoting what it terms “bold new solution to a major urban challenge.”
The prime minister will speak at the Global Citizens Festival in Central Park, hosted by the Global Poverty Project, which aims to end poverty worldwide.
Modi will meet a small group of eminent Indian Americans and discuss with them how the community can help strengthen India-US relations.
Sunday, September 28, 2014:
The prime minister will meet South Carolina’s Indian American Governor Nikki Haley.
Modi will address the community at Madison Square Garden at noon.
He will attend a reception in his honor at the Taj-owned The Pierre hotel.
Monday, September 29, 2014:
The prime minister will meet a group of prominent American CEOs; some of them are likely to meet him individually.
He will meet with former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
At 1 pm, the prime minister will speak at the Council on Foreign Relations. He will depart for Washington after the speech.
In Washington, the premier will arrive at Andrews Air Force Base.
In the evening, he will have dinner with President Obama.
The prime minister will spend the night at the historic Blair House, across the White House.
Tuesday, September 30, 2014:
The prime minister will visit the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial to pay homage to two American icons, whose names are associated with emancipation.
He will then visit the Statue of Gandhi in front of the Embassy of India on Massachusetts Avenue, NW.
Modi will have formal meetings with US leaders.
The prime minister will attend a lunch hosted in his honor by Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Kerry at the State Department in Foggy Bottom.
He will meet the House leadership, including Speaker John Boehner.
Modi’s last event in Washington will be a reception hosted by the US-India Business Council.
