MUMBAI: The Maratha Mandir here has been screening the Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol starrer ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’ for almost 19 years, since its release on October 20, 1995. In 2007, the Aditya Chopra-directed film broke the record set by Sholay by seven years for a non-stop run by a Hindi film.
Word comes now from Maratha Mandir that they don’t intend to pull the film anytime soon. The single screen theater schedules shows of new films, but the matinee slot is going to be there for DDLJ for some more time. It remains to be seen for how long.
While DDLJ is one of the finest romantic films made in Bollywood, the songs of which continue to enthrall new generations, when it comes to records for non-stop screening of a film globally, it falls way short of the American cult classic, The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Produced by 20th Century Fox, and released in 1975, the film has never been pulled by the production house, and continues to be screened at theaters around the US. However, it’s not known if any single theater like Maratha Mandir has screened the film continuously since its release 39 years ago.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a musical comedy horror film directed by Jim Sharman. The screenplay was written by Sharman and Richard O’Brien based on the 1973 musical stage production, The Rocky Horror Show, also written by O’Brien. The production is a humorous tribute to the science fiction and horror B movies of the late 1930s through early 1970s, according to Wikipedia. It stars Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick along with cast members from the original Royal Court Theatre, Roxy Theatre and Belasco Theatre productions.
