BENGALURU: Google started rolling out its latest Android mobile operating system version 5.0, Lollipop, to a few flagship devices and the same has been made available for tech enthusiasts to download and install manually.
As of now only Nexus 4, 5 and 7 devices received the update, but Google has provided a firmware download of Lollipop in Google Developer website for free.
Android Department posted on the official twitter account earlier on Thursday that the Lollipop update is scheduled to reach Nexus devices in a few hours. As it is the case with all Android updates, users of other smartphones running on the Android platform will have to wait for the customized version of Lollipop from their respective vendors.
Motorola announced that soon after the release of the stable version of Lollipop they will update the 2nd generation Moto X and Moto G devices in the United States and later the update will be made available to other devices like Moto E, Droid Turbo, Droid Mini, Droid Ultra, and Droid Maxx across the world.
Smartphone users who have the technical knowledge of installing the Android Factory image of Lollipop can download it and flash their devices after backing up all the data. Users who flash their smartphone should keep in mind that some smartphone manufactures have a disclaimer that void the warranty of the device after rooting.
Google planned to roll out the Lollipop update last week but, it was postponed by the tech giant citing a few bug fixes to improve the battery backup.
Trevor Johns, a Google engineer for the Android Open Source Project, said last week that, “Android Engineering is aware of an issue affecting Nexus 5 users running Android 5.0 which causes significant ‘Miscellaneous’ battery usage while wi-fi is enabled. This appears to be caused by an abnormally high number of IRQ wakeup events.”
Earlier this week, LG had announced that the company will be rolling out a customized version of Android Lollipop for its G3 smartphone.
Jong-seok Park, president of LG said, “LG is absolutely committed to giving our customers the best mobile experiences available and bringing Android Lollipop to G3 owners as soon as possible is a top priority.”
The Android Open Source Lollipop project has different build variants such asCyanogenMod, Paranoid Android, and OmniROM. All these will be available for download in the coming weeks.
