WASHINGTON, DC: In a shocking murder, an Indian American man, Labh Nigah Singh, 55, was stabbed to death after having just dropped off his son at an elementary school in Oxnard, California, last Thursday.
Singh was stabbed repeatedly by an unknown number of assailants in what police said was “an act of senseless violence” as he walked at Sierra Linda Park at 8:45 a.m., Oxnard police said in a news release.
Police have made no arrests and are trying to piece together a motive. Singh dropped off his child at the nearby Sierra Linda Elementary School earlier in the morning, said Commander Eric Sonstegard, of the Oxnard Police Department, reported NBC.
“The Sierra Linda neighborhood is a safe and prosperous residential area that has rarely experienced crimes of this nature,” police said.
The Times of India reported relatives of Singh, living in Magarh Kohara, about 20 km from Ludhiana, said he had lived in the US for decades. He had got married in 1992, and has two daughters and a son.
“It seems to be a case of hate crime and the cops are not handing over the body to my sister Jaswinder Kaur who is alone with the kids in California. She does not know what to do. We have approached MPs Ravneet Bittu, Bhagwant Mann and Balwant Singh Ramoowalia for help as we want that his body should be sent back to India,” said a relative to the Times.
The City of Oxnard is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of suspect(s) in the case.
