WASHINGTON, DC: Even as it’s roiled in yet another sexual harassment case against one of its top executives, Mukund Srinath, who heads their global general counsel, the Bengaluru-based Information Technology services company iGate is facing further embarrassment after it’s been learnt that it paid their former CEO Phaneesh Murthy $4.6 million to settle a lawsuit.

The Times of India first reported the story of Murthy getting the settlement from iGate, after he had filed a defamation and breach-of-contract lawsuit which had claimed that the company had withheld more than $5 million in stocks and additional monthly charges due to him, after he was fired from the company in May, 2013, for not disclosing his relationship with the company’s investor relations head Araceli Roiz.
Murthy was earlier forced to quit from Infosys on a similar charge of sexual misconduct with an employee.
Murthy, who lives in California, said all issues with iGate have been settled, according to the Press Trist of India.
“All matters (with iGate) have been resolved,” Murthy was quoted as saying.
The Times reported that in a recent earnings call, iGate CEO Ashok Vemury disclosed that the company had incurred a one-time charge for legal settlement of $4.6 million, to Murthy, according to unidentified sources.
Seven months after he was fired, Murthy filed a suit against iGate charging it with withholding 5,00,000 in vested stocks and various benefits due to him. He also claimed other termination benefits and $6,000 per month that he was expected to get as medical benefit even after he left the company. He, further, disputed iGate’s claims that it was not aware of his relationship with Roiz.
The company had allegedly settled the case with Roiz.
In March last year, iGate filed a counter-complaint against Murthy alleging that the firm had suffered significant damages from the events following Murthy’s failure to disclose his relationship with the subordinate employee, and claimed compensation. iGate charged Murthy with participating in a secret mediation with Roiz without notifying the company. It said that only when the mediation was unsuccessful did he notify iGate about Roiz’s claims against him and the company, according to the Times.
