WASHINGTON, DC: A University of Illinois student has been charged with sexually assaulting a 19-year-old female student after allegedly trying to reenact scenes fromFifty Shades of Grey.
Mohammad Hossain, also 19, stands accused of binding his victim, whipping and punching her, and ultimately raping her in his dormitory.
The engineering student admitted to police that he assaulted the woman, and even that he was “doing something wrong,” but said he and the woman had been reenacting scenes from Fifty Shades of Grey.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the judge in Hossain’s case was taken aback when his attorney, assistant Cook County public defender Sandra Bennewitz, said the teenager had been involved with several UIC leadership programs, was a student ambassador to the alumni association, and was on the triathlon team.
“Sandra, how can someone involved in all that let a movie persuade him to do something like this,” asked Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr.
“He would say that it was consensual,” Bennewitz replied.
Prosecutors said Hossain and the woman went to Hossain’s dorm room about 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
Once inside his dorm, Hossain allegedly asked the woman to remove her clothing, which she did, keeping on her bra and underwear. He then bound her hands above her head and to a bed with a belt, used another belt to bind her legs, and proceeded to stuff a necktie in her mouth.
Hossain used a knit cap to blindfold his victim and then removed the woman’s bra and underwear before striking the woman with a belt. After hitting her several times, the woman told Hossain he was hurting her, told him to stop “and began shaking her head and crying,” according to Assistant State’s Attorney Sarah Karr.
Hossain continued to pummel the woman for a sustained duration time — including with his fists. When she managed to get her arms free, he held them behind her back and sexually assaulted her as she continued to plead for him to stop, said Karr.
Hossain’s roommate reportedly arrived shortly after the assault transpired, but Hossain held the door shut to prevent him from gaining entry to the room. The woman consequently was allowed to leave, after which she called the police.
