WASHINGTON, DC: US deportee Vikash Sharma, 27, held after having more than $1.6 million in drugs and four-high powered guns in San Fernando has been granted $4 million bail in San Fernando on the island nation of Trinidad & Tobago.
Sharma, who is of Indian origin, was initially denied bail because the police wanted an opportunity to check with Interpol for information on Sharma’s criminal past, according to the Trinidad & Tobago Guardian.
Sharma was arrested in possession of four guns, including an AK-47 rifle, a revolver, and two pistols, reported the Trinidad Express.
Constable Larry Goddard said Sharma’s assortment of ammo included had four magazines, 21 rounds of 9 mm ammunition, and seven rounds of .38 ammo.
The T&T Express also noted a shoe box containing 11 clear packets and two metal pots were tendered into evidence. Police prosecutor Sgt. Veano Ragoo said they contained a “creamish substance resembling cocaine, with a combined weight of 2.376 kilograms”. Sharma was also charged with possession of 40 grams of marijuana which was allegedly found the same day.
Sharma’s attorney, Jason Jackson, said his client was being treated for anxiety and depression and needed daily medication.
He admitted that Sharma had a pending matter for receiving stolen jewelry and had asked that he be granted bail with conditions.
Ragoo’s request for a 14 day stay of bail to have the Interpol trace run was argued by Jackson as being unfair, given the length of time his client had already been in custody.
Magistrate Siumongal Ramsarangave gave the police 10 days to have the trace done. He said in order to consider bail, he needed to know the circumstances which caused Sharma’s deportation.
