WASHINGTON, DC: A Canadian tourist who was visiting the U.S. to attend the Kentucky Derby was shot to death while attempting to fight off three people who robbed him after the race festivities had concluded, police disclosed Monday.
All three suspects have been arrested and police said the trio was responsible for a string of armed robberies at the event.
The victim, 49-year-old Scott Hunter, was walking back to his Louisville hotel with a friend hours after the Derby ended when the suspects targeted them for a robbery, Louisville Metro Police Lt. Todd Kessinger told the Associated Press. The robbery appeared to be random, and the tourist was shot during a struggle with the attackers, Kessinger said.
Friends of Scott Hunter described him as a great guy and lively character, and he was a bartender in downtown Toronto for nine years.
“He was down there to watch the race and was having a good time and last we heard he had texted or called his girlfriend and was having a great time and then his family contacted me Sunday morning and I can only imagine what they’re going through,” his boss, Beau Opperman, told WDRB by phone
Police worked on the case all weekend and arrested Fahed Abu-Diab, Fatima Abu-Diab and Tyrone Thomas Jr. “Two are brother and sister and the third is the boyfriend of the sister,” explained Kessinger.
Fahed and Fatima Abu-Diab are charged with murder, while Thomas is charged with complicity to murder. All three are facing nearly a dozen robbery charges and Fatima Abu-Diab is also facing a possession of a controlled substance charge, reported WDRB.
