NEW DELHI: In a horrifying incident of a marriage gone awry and retribution, as well as of male chauvinism and gender bestiality, a man burnt his wife, at a crowded traffic roundabout in Jyoti Nagar in Delhi, on Thursday evening. The victim is in critical condition.
The Indian Express reported that the alleged attacker Mohammed Raees and his wife Rubina, 25, had been living separately for a few months after their six-year-old marriage ran into trouble.
The couple had two children, aged 5 and 3. The couple used to quarrel over domestic and marital issues. Rubina was living with her mother in Seemapuri while the children were with Raees in his house in Indrapuri, Ghaziabad.
Raees, armed with a bottle of kerosene, called Rubina to a meeting point at the Loni roundabout at around 4 p.m. on Thursday to ostensibly resolve their longstanding domestic problems, the Express reported. However, according to the police, he instead poured kerosene on her and lit a match to her body.
Raees then fled the scene as his wife was in flames, screaming. Some locals helped her douse the fire, and rushed her to hospital.
“The woman was admitted to Guru Tegh Bahadur hospital, where she was treated for 70-75 per cent burn injuries. The burn injuries are severe and her condition is said to be critical with little chance of survival,” joint commissioner of police (eastern range) Sanjay Beniwal said, reported the Hindu.
“We have registered a case of attempt-to-murder. The accused is absconding and police teams are trying to trace him. Eyewitnesses are also being questioned,” he said, according to the Express.
