“Kalyana Saugandhikam” is a popular story among fans of Kathakali, which is one of the eight prominent classical dance forms of India.
The story, taken from the Vana Parva of the Indian epic Mahabharatha, was performed on May 3, 2015, at the Sri Siva Vishnu Temple auditorium in Lanham, MD, by Guru Sadanam Balakrishnan and his troupe of Kathakali artists from Kerala.
Bhima, second of the five Pandava brothers, was performed by Sadanam Balakrishnan. Draupathi, the wife of the Pandava brothers, was played by Sadanam Vijayan and the monkey God Hanuman by Sadanam Bhasi.
The captivating performance was attended and enjoyed by the capital city’s die-hard fans of this art form, which originated in the Kerala region in the 17th century.
