BENGALURU: Micromax, the tenth largest smartphone maker in the world, has announced the launch of the company’s new flagship device called Canvas Silver 5, touted as the world’s slimmest and lightest smartphone for Rs. 17,999.
According to the claims of Micromax, the new Canvas Silver 5 is just 5.1mm thick and weighs only 95 grams, making it the lightest phone in the world. But a search online for the slimmest smartphone has revealed phones that are equally thin. Micromax has countered this argument by pointing out the flat camera in Canvas Silver 5, which is an exception among all other devices.
While speaking at the launch event, Vineet Taneja, the CEO of Micromax, said the company was able to make the feature rich thin phone by adapting each component of the phone in such a way that it reduces the size of the device. According to him, the 4.8-inch AMOLED display used in the device has an integrated touch panel and an ultra-thin PCB that makes the Canvas Silver 5 one among the world’s slimmest smartphones.
One of the let downs of the device is its pricing, which is a little more expensive than other Micromax flagship devices. But, the company has put in an argument that they have used the first grade aluminium for making its frame and other parts also are up to quality standards.
Taneja also said that his company, going forward will put priority on the design, performance and after sales service of its devices.
“Going forward you will see a lot of innovation in customer service,” he said.
Like its subsidiary brand Yu that focuses only on net savvy users, Micromax is also planning to make its service available to user’s doorstep and also guarantees users that they will return the device within seven days after the pickup.
Taneja added, “That is the promise we make and this will become the industry standard.”
The new Micromax Canvas Silver 5 is powered by a midlevel 64-bit Snapdragon 410 Processor with integrated 4G/LTE enabled. The device has an 8MP rear camera with Sony IMZ219 sensor and blue filter. Adding to this, Micromax has also added a 5Mp front facing selfie camera.
Even though the device is backed only by a 2000mAh battery, which is way below the common standard of a mid-range smartphone, Micromax claims that they have engineered the best low energy consuming components for Canvas Silver 5, which will bring down the energy consumption, adding more life to the battery.
The new Canvas Silver 5 has 2GB Ram and an internal storage capacity of 16 Gb which unfortunately is not expandable. Micromax once again has roped in Hollywood actor Hugh Jackman to promote the phone. Earlier, Jackman had appeared in the promotion ad of Micromax Turbo, which ultimately became a low profile smartphone.
