WASHINGTON, DC: Hollywood actress Freida Pinto and Coldplay front man Chris Martin met with prime minister Narendra Modi as a follow-up to last year’s Global Citizen Festival in New York City, where the prime minister called for a global movement to end poverty and provide universal sanitation.
During the meeting, Pinto and Martin, accompanied by delegates from the Global Poverty Project, discussed how they could support Modi’s “Swachh Bharat” campaign and his initiative to provide universal sanitation throughout India by 2019.
According to The Indian Express, they also thanked the prime minister for his international leadership in elevating the cause of sanitation, with a focus on girls and women, in the context of the global agenda.
“It was an honor to spend time with Prime Minister Modi today. His leadership in India, the region, and around the world is an inspiration to many,” said Hugh Evans, chief executive officer of the Global Poverty Project, in a statement. “We discussed the progress that has been made on the ‘Swachh Bharat’ campaign and his enduring commitment to ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’. The Global Poverty Project and Global Citizen look forward to a long and ongoing association with the Prime Minister’s Office to achieve the end of extreme poverty by 2030. ”
Earlier in the week, photos of Chris Martin giving an impromptu performance at the Summer House Café in Delhi exploded on social media, prompting many Indian fans to rue that they missed the Wednesday night performance. IBN Live reported he was accompanied by Pinto, music director Vishal Dadlani, musician Raghu Dixit, and members of a standup comedy collective.
