BENGALURU: SS Rajamouli has branded himself as the Midas of south Indian cinema with the gigantic success of “Baahubali”, which has now crossed Rs. 215 crore mark just a week after it was released in over 4000 plus theatres across India.
“Baahubali”, released in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam, is an epic drama that has, by now, become a yardstick among big-budget filmmakers in India. Rajamouli has made the writing clear on the wall by making an almost perfect entertainer and has made things difficult for mediocre directors who believed that India cinema cannot meddle with Hollywood perfection.
A week after “Baahubali” got released; the movie has made it to the history books, breaking many records.
# The release day collection of “Baahubali” crossed Rs. 50 crore ($7.8 Million), the highest by any movie in India. The earlier record belonged to Shah Rukh Khan’s Happy New Year that earned Rs. 45 crore on the first day of release.
# The long queue outside theatres screening the Hindi version of “Baahubali” continued during the opening weekend and ended up collecting Rs 22 crore ($3.4 million), highest by any dubbed movie ever.
# Combining all versions of “Baahubali”, it became the fastest movie to reach the Rs. 50 crore and Rs 100 crore mark. Three days collection of “Baahubali” reached the magic figure of Rs. 145 crore ($22.5 million), highest by any Indian film.
# “Baahubali” also broke India’s existing record in the US box office by becoming the highest opening and weekend grosser. It broke all existing records of regional movies within the first two days of release. “Baahubali” got an average per screen collection of $17k, second only to Minions, which had a per screen average of $27k.
# According to Arka Media Works, the producers of “Baahubali”, the movie was released in 4650 theatres across the globe. The dubbed version of “Baahubali” was screened in 2000 theatres, the first ever wide release of its kind. The dubbed versions of the movie were screened in 1350 screens in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, 350 in Tamil Nadu, 300 in Karnataka, 150 in Kerala and nearly 250 screens in the US.
# “Baahubali” has been showing tremendous growth rate in daily earning, an approximate of 40% every day for the Hindi dub. Also, “Baahubali” has been running in theatres across the south with the packed audience starting from day one. Despite being a Monday, Rajamouli fans thronged into theatres, registering only a marginal dip in the collection on a day that usually gives the worst stats.
# Interestingly, “Baahubali” got an IMDB rating of 9.5, and is most reviewed for the mind-blowing VFX and CGI. The production cost of the movie, and it upcoming sequel, is another talking point among people; the movie was completed for a budget of Rs 250 crore ($41 million).
What we have witnessed till now is just ‘The Beginning’, as the days progress, “Baahubali” is expected to cross many more records and Arka Media, which has already earned Rs. 100 crore could end up as the producers of the highest grossing Indian movie ever made.
Shobhu Yaralagadda of Arka Media the producers of “Baahubali” said: “We are really excited and happy with the response the film is receiving from critics and audiences around the world. Our belief in Rajamouli’s vision and the hard work put in by the entire cast and crew has paid off and how! The success of the film across languages in India and abroad proves that a regional film with universal appeal can transcend cultural and geographical barriers.”
