WASHINGTON, DC: Indian-Canadian comedian, rapper, and motivational speaker Lilly Singh, who shot to stardom as aYouTube sensation under the handle Superwoman — styled “IISuperwomanII” — has earned herself a nomination at the Teen Choice Awards, to be held on August 16 in Los Angeles, Calif.
Singh, 26, was nominated in the “Choice YouTuber” and “Choice Web Star: Comedy” categories, according to Celebuzz.
The news of her dual nominations comes hot on the heels of a world tour that will be the subject of an upcoming documentary starring Singh titled “A Trip to Unicorn Island.”
“It’s very close to my heart,” Singh told Entertainment Weekly about the project, a sneak peek of which debuted at VidCon last month.
“It’s a story about me going through the trials and tribulations of my life, and really making the decision to be happy,” Singh, who has more than 6 million subscribers on YouTube, told EW. “How can I tell this story of not just my tour but my life in general to people that came to the show or couldn’t come to the show? I didn’t want to make it a video because I wanted to transcend beyond the audience I have. I wanted it to be in this fashion of storytelling where you could come on a journey through my life framed through my tour.
Born in Ontario to Malwinder and Sukhwinder Singh, the YouTube star posts videos every twice weekly.
Singh admits to having battled depression, and that she started making videos to help herself feel better.
After the videos aided Singh in traversing a troubled time in her life, she decided to pursue a career as a YouTube entertainer partly because of the lack of female representation on the internet from the South Asian community, Celebuzz reported.
“… every time I go on the stage, I’m trying to be authentic and speaking and hoping that people will relate to me,” she told EW, “… And I hope it touches people’s hearts,” she added.
