SAN FRANCISCO: Ravi Kapur, the founder of the Hawaiian-themed restaurant Liholiho Yacht Club, who was recently named the ‘Best Chef of 2015’ by San Francisco Magazine, has now become a bigger entity in the world of gourmands in the United States.
Bon Appétit just released its list of 50 restaurants nominated for a coveted spot on the Bon Appétit Hot 10 – America’s Best New Restaurants – and Kapur’s Liholiho Yacht Club is amongst six San Francisco establishments who made the cut, reported CBS.
Of his menu, Kapur, who is from Hawaii, told San Francisco Magazine, “The heart of it is just being delicious and fun.”
This is how Bon Appétit describes Kapur’s Liholiho Yacht Club, which is on Sutter Street, and opened last January: “There’s a long story behind the name involving a group of friends, some wild and crazy parties and a street name in Hawaii.
“But Bon Appétit says the Hawaii connection should end there. “Calling this a Hawaiian restaurant would be like calling Lady Gaga a “talented singer.” They suggest the tuna poke with nori crackers, beef ribs with kimchi-chili sauce, and the off-menu, house-made Spam, served over rice with furikake.
SF Weekly, in a review of the restiarant, had also noted Kapur’s signature poke dish.
The reviewer noted: “I sang full volume after Chef Ravi Kapur’s poke ($14.50), which speaks fully of Hawaii. The glistening ruby fish, with just a dab of sesame oil and sriracha aioli, tops a nori chip that seems as if five pounds of seaweed were crammed into it.”
