WASHINGTON, DC: The three-week old baby whose mother threw him out of a fourth-floor window in Queens, New York, told police she believed an evil spirit had taken possession of her son’s body.
Rashida Chowdhury is being held without bail after her arrest late last week in the death of her son Rizwan.
According to the criminal complaint, the 21-year-old threw the baby out of her bathroom window around 4 a.m. on Aug. 7, according to the Associated Press.
A neighbor reported hearing the child hit the ground and called the authorities; the defenestrated infant died at the scene from blunt impact injuries.
Investigators believe the deranged mother may have been struggling with post-partum depression, reported the New York-based newspaper.
Charged with murder, Chowdhury, 21, is being held without bail on Rikers Island after being placed on suicide watch during her arraignment in Queens Criminal Court on Saturday.
The newborn had been hospitalized recently; the infant had to spend three nights at Long Island Jewish Hospital before returning home on account of a viral infection, only to be murdered a few hours later.
According to court records, Chowdhury said she was “stopping the pain” by throwing him out the window.
A neighbor said she encountered the baby’s father, also named Rizwan Ahmad, in the courtyard, later that night.
“He was crying a lot,” Eleni Anastasopoulos, 34, told the Daily News. “He kept saying, ‘My first child, my first child.'”
